Congratulations to Pro-Formula Laboratories!
LYTE BYTES
Click Image After more than 26 years as a leading supplier of nutritional supplements for the country’s top racehorses, Pro-Formula Laboratories has created "Lyte Now" for humans.
Lyte Now is an oral electrolyte paste that provides minerals lost through exercise, improper dieting, stress and perspiration, thus preventing dehydration, muscle cramps, heat stress and exhaustion.
All-natural Lyte Now contains essential minerals such as sodium chloride, magnesium and potassium as well as other trace minerals and amino acids.
The minerals contained in Lyte Now are mined from a 2,000-acre mineral deposit in the westernmost region of the Great Basin in Nevada. Pro-Formula has exclusive rights to this mineral deposit.
Lyte Now, which is absorbed into the body in a matter of minutes, provides energy and stamina and speeds up the recovery process from exercise by quickly replacing essential minerals. It’s ideal before, during and after training and events.
For more information on Lyte Now, call (800) 525-3007.

 This Week's NutraBytes!
LYTE BYTES
Congratulations to Pro-Formula Laboratories!
And they’re off.
The stamina, the grace, the speed. Who wouldn’t want the admirable qualities associated with the world’s finest thoroughbred racehorses?
That’s a question posed by a Fort Lauderdale company that is offering the secret success of thoroughbreds’ endurance and speed to humans. Pro-Formula Laboratories, Inc., a leading supplier of nutritional supplements for high-performance horses, has transformed its top-selling electrolyte supplement for horses into a performance and health enhancer for humans.
“Many of the top breeders in the country use our electrolyte supplement, Lyte Now, to promote energy and recovery from exercise as well as to prevent dehydration, cramping, muscle fatigue and heat stress,” said Dr. Leonard Cohn, President of Pro-Formula Laboratories, top supplier of electrolytes to the horse racing industry. “Electrolytes are just as important for humans. They are the ‘power source’ of cells and play major roles in the body’s functions.”
So DSN wondered: Is Dr. Cohn on to something? What are these mysterious electrolytes and are they as essential as Pro-Formula would have us believe?
Take a look at our scoop on electrolytes.
What are electrolytes?
Electrolytes are minerals that help cells function normally. They are substances or compounds consisting of various chemicals that can carry electric charges. When dissolved in water, electrolytes dissociate into positively and negatively charged ions. These mineral salts were named electrolytes because when placed in a solution they will conduct an electric current due to the movement of the separated positive and negative ions toward electrodes placed in the water. They are distributed in such a way that within a given compartment, electrical neutrality is maintained.
These simple elements play a large role in supporting the body functions. They include:
· Sodium
· Chlorine
· Potassium
· Calcium
· Phosphorus
· Magnesium
· Bicarbonates
These dissolved electrolytes are present inside the body cells in the intracellular fluid and also outside the cells in the extracellular fluid (in the spaces between the cells) and in the bloodstream. Body cells cannot function or survive in pure water. Our tissues are designed in such a way that electrolytes must accompany the water as it moves within our bodies. This is why body fluids such as blood and sweat are salty. Water by itself cannot pass through the skin’s pores, but the salty fluid of sweat can. Thus when sweating occurs, there is a loss of both water and electrolytes.
Role of Electrolytes
Electrolytes play a major role in many of the body’s major functions. They not only provide energy, balance and stamina but also make healing, digestion and movement possible.
The minerals are essential to the formation of new body tissues. They transport electrical charges across the cell membranes, making muscle action possible. They trigger nerve functions and facilitate the transfer of energy within cells. They also maintain the body’s fluid balance.
Magnesium, which is one of the most important electrolytes, builds the central nervous system so that messages can be sent along the nerves to and from the brain. Without this nutrient, the body loses its ability to repair itself.
Potassium is pivotal to many body functions including maintaining electrolyte and pH balance, nutrient transfer across cell membranes and proper water balance. This macromineral also influences the contractility of smooth, skeletal and cardiac muscles.
Electrolytes help food enter cells and waste to leave cells.
The loss of electrolytes can lead to exhaustion, cramping, dehydration, heat stress and muscle fatigue.
Electrolyte balance is crucial to many body functions. Taking just one electrolyte is not wise because the body needs a balance. For instance, too much potassium will block some nutrients from going into cells. They will be directed back into the blood and forced out of the body.
Here are some extreme examples of what can happen with an imbalance of electrolytes:
· Elevated potassium levels may result in cardiac arrhythmias
· Decreased extracellular potassium produces paralysis
· Excessive extracellular sodium causes fluid retention
Who Benefits?
Everyone needs electrolytes to live and thrive. The basic building blocks of life and health, electrolytes help improve energy and our overall health. Without them, our body suffers.
Electrolyte replacement is important for active people from high endurance athletes to regular people who are trying to stay or get in shape. Lost through perspiration, electrolytes are important before, during and after training or an event. Electrolyte supplementation can play a pivotal role in helping the body recover from exercise.
Electrolyte supplementation is also becoming increasingly necessary as basic nutrients are being lost from poor eating habits, processed food and other food.
Carbohydrate and electrolytes combination is used to treat or prevent dehydration (the loss of too much water from the body) that may occur with severe diarrhea, especially in babies and young children. Although this medicine does not immediately stop the diarrhea, it replaces the water and some important salts (electrolytes), such as sodium and potassium, that are lost from the body during diarrhea, and helps prevent more serious problems. Some carbohydrate and electrolytes solutions may also be used after surgery when food intake has been stopped.
